La Limonière

Located between Sézanne and Vindey, in the southwestern part of the Marne department, the Limonière nature reserve is a protected area designated as a Natura 2000 site. This vast, 97-hectare wooded area is home to remarkable biodiversity and offers visitors an immersive experience in the heart of a unique landscape that blends ponds and acidic heathlands.

The Limonière Trail, approximately 4.5 km long, offers visitors the chance to explore a natural environment that is rare in the region. More than 300 ponds dot the site, a legacy of the former extraction of loam, which was once used to enrich agricultural and vineyard soils. This mosaic of natural habitats supports a particularly rich variety of flora and fauna.

Along the trail, visitors can spot many species typical of forest and wetland habitats: woodpeckers (black woodpecker, green woodpecker, great spotted woodpecker, and middle spotted woodpecker), frogs, and newts. Among them, the crested newt—a protected species nicknamed the “freshwater dragon”—finds an ideal habitat here. In the spring, the ponds are also adorned with aquatic plants such as the yellow-flowered bladderwort and water primroses.

Accessible from Vindey or near the municipal campground in Sézanne, this nature trail offers a peaceful walk in any season—ideal for exploring the area’s remarkable natural heritage while enjoying the coolness of the forest.
